Today, Lestedo’s “Filloa” Cultural Association will use a new filloeira (filloa-making) machine for the first time, thanks to a subsidy from A Coruña Provincial Council

Lestedo’s “Filloa” Cultural Association has cause for celebration today, Saturday: in addition to the first Festa da Filloíña and Entroido da Filloa events, it has a new filloeira (filloa-making machine), which was acquired thanks to a subsidy from A Coruña Provincial Council. Precisely this morning, the provincial councillor Blas García accompanied the president of Lestedo’s “Filloa” Cultural Association, Xosé Manuel Canabal, and the mayor of Boqueixón, Manuel Fernández Munín, at the start-up of this new machine in Lestedo’s social centre.

The machine can make 800 “filloas” per hour. Starting this morning, the members of Lestedo’s “Filloa” Cultural Association have been getting everything ready for the afternoon, when the Festa da Filloíña and Entroido da Filloa events will be held for the first time. The association’s members explained to the official party the way that “filloas” are made in Lestedo, emphasizing the skill of the cooks and the use of local ingredients, such as water from Pico Rather, rather than the machine itself.

Xosé Manuel Canabal thanked A Coruña Provincial Council for its support in funding close to 75% of the new filloeira (filloa-making) machine. The official party was able to savour these delicious “filloas,” which will also be available this afternoon to everyone participating in the Festa da Filloíña event, at which the kids participating in the fancy dress competition or those who come dressed up can eat them for free.

Programme

The festival will begin at 5.30 pm with a performance by several music groups from the surrounding area, followed by the opening speech of the children’s festival and performances by the xeneraliños (little generals), as a nod to tradition. After the fancy dress competition there will be a children’s festival with Priscila Dance. At 10 pm, Lestedo’s fairground will change to an adult public with music by the Finisterre orchestra and the Origen group, who will give way to a fancy-dress competition for adults, with 750 euros in prize money.

Xenerais of Sergude

And on Sunday the Sergude Carnival will be held, beginning at 1 pm with the “Correos” (dispatch riders), Xenerais (generals) and carnival groups going around the parish with their songs, accompanied by music from the local bagpipe band “Son de gaitas”. In the evening, starting at 6.30 pm, Sergude’s fairground will host performances by carnival groups and the Xenerais (generals) of the Ulla, who will be followed by the Grand Fancy-Dress Ball featuring the music of Dúo Óbice. There will be free hot chocolate and churros, as well as a lucky draw to win a batch of carnival produce and en electric scooter.
